30 Shadow Work Journal Prompts for Deep Self-Discovery
30 Shadow Work Journal Prompts
Journaling is the core practice of shadow work. But shadow journaling is different from regular journaling. You're not writing about your day — you're writing about what's underneath your day.
Write without editing. The shadow speaks in first drafts, not polished prose. If you feel resistance while writing, lean into it — that's exactly where the shadow lives.
Our [daily journal](/journal) offers AI-powered prompts tailored to your specific archetype. But these 30 prompts work for anyone.
Childhood Wounds
1. What rule did you learn as a child about what emotions were acceptable?
2. Describe a moment when you were punished or shamed for being yourself. What did you learn to hide?
3. What did your parents model about conflict? How does that show up in your life now?
4. Write about a time when you needed comfort and didn't receive it. What did you teach yourself about needing?
5. What version of yourself did your family celebrate? What version did they ignore?
Relationships
6. Who triggers you the most, and what does their behavior mirror in you?
7. What pattern keeps repeating in your relationships? Describe the last three times it happened.
8. What do you pretend not to need in relationships? What would happen if you asked for it directly?
9. Write about someone you resent. Now write what they'd say about you if they were being honest.
10. How do you push people away? What's the move you make when someone gets too close?
Career and Ambition
11. What would you pursue if failure wasn't possible? Why aren't you pursuing it?
12. What does your "professional self" hide that your private self knows?
13. When was the last time you dimmed yourself to make someone else comfortable at work?
14. What would your coworkers be surprised to learn about you? Why do you hide it?
15. Write about a success that felt hollow. What were you actually chasing?
Fear
16. What are you most afraid of other people discovering about you?
17. If your fear had a voice, what would it say? Write from its perspective.
18. What would you do today if you knew no one was watching?
19. What's the worst thing that could happen if you were fully, authentically yourself?
20. Write about a fear you've never admitted to anyone. Why this one?
Anger
21. What makes you disproportionately angry? Trace it backward — where did you first learn to react this way?
22. Write a letter to the person who hurt you most. Don't hold back. Don't send it.
23. What anger are you carrying that belongs to someone else?
24. When was the last time you swallowed anger to keep the peace? What did it cost you?
25. If your anger could speak without consequences, what would it demand?
The Shadow Itself
26. Write a conversation between you and your shadow. Let it speak first.
27. What compliment makes you uncomfortable? Why can't you receive it?
28. Describe the version of you that exists at 3 AM when all masks are off.
29. What would your shadow archetype say if it could write you one paragraph? ([Take the quiz](/quiz) to discover your archetype first.)
30. Write one sentence that is true about you that you have never said out loud. Then say it on the [Whisper Wall](/whisper).
How to Use These Prompts
Don't try to do all 30 at once. Pick one per day — or one per week. The depth matters more than the volume.
Write for at least 10 minutes per prompt. When you feel like stopping, write for 5 more minutes. The shadow hides behind the urge to stop.
